Shooting brand video on a single-day production budget that still converts

Why most brand video budgets get spent on the wrong thing

The default brand video brief is "one 90-second hero film, fully scripted, full crew, two-day shoot, six-week edit." It produces a beautiful asset that runs once on a homepage hero and then dies.

Performance marketing needs the opposite: 15–25 short, native-looking assets per quarter. A single production day can carry an account for 90 days of paid media. $3.5k–$6k per shoot day fully loaded.

    Pre-production (the week before)

    Asset map first, script second

    • 5 product/service demo cuts (15–30 sec)
    • 3 founder/operator pieces (45–60 sec)
    • 4–6 testimonial cuts (20–40 sec)
    • 2 brand cuts (15–25 sec)
    • 10–15 B-roll clips for remix

Reverse from the assets, not from a script.

    Permissions and releases

Every person on camera signs a release before the camera is on. Saves the shoot from being unusable later.

    The 30-minute morning brief

Operator, talent, one stakeholder. Walk the locations, confirm shot order, pre-empt the objections.

    Equipment, sized for one operator

    • Camera: Sony A7IV or FX30
    • Lenses: 24–70mm f/2.8, 70–200mm f/4, 14mm prime
    • Audio: Two wireless lavs (Rode Wireless Pro or DJI Mic 2)
    • Lighting: Aputure 300X + softbox, two RGB tubes
    • Support: Tripod, DJI RS3 gimbal. No slider.

Everything fits in one Pelican and one camera backpack.

The shoot day, hour by hour

    • Hour 1 — Talking heads. Highest-priority, shot first. 4–6 topics, 90 sec each, bullet points not full sentences.
    • Hour 2 — Product/service demo. Vertical and horizontal at every angle.
    • Hour 3 — B-roll sweep. 60–90 minutes of B-roll = a year of remixes.
    • Hour 4 — Testimonials. Three to four people. Same prompt: "What changed for you?" Never write the answers.
    • Hour 5 — Stylized / branded shots. Shot last because it''s the most replaceable.
    • Hour 6 — Buffer + reshoots. Always needed. Always used.

    Post-production: the 10-day delivery system

    • Day 1–2: Full transcript. Logger marks best 60 sec of each.
    • Day 3–4: Assembly cuts of 5 priority assets. Rough music, no colour.
    • Day 5: Client review #1. 24-hour turnaround.
    • Day 6–8: Polished cuts of all 15–25 assets. Colour, music, captions burned in.
    • Day 9: Client review #2. Small tweaks only.
    • Day 10: Final delivery, named and tagged.

Captions burned in are non-negotiable. 85% of paid social plays muted.

    The finished kit

    • 5 product/service demo cuts in 9:16, 4:5, 16:9
    • 3 founder pieces in three ratios
    • 4 testimonial cuts
    • 2 brand pieces
    • 60+ unedited B-roll clips
    • One 60–90 sec "long-form" hero for site and YouTube

Enough creative supply for a $3k–$15k/month ad account for a full quarter.

    What we cut

    • Sliders, drones, jibs. Replaced by gimbal + prime lens.
    • Two-day shoots. Compressed to one with better pre-production.
    • Music licensing rabbit holes. Curated 100-track library.
    • Animated logo bumpers. Brand should be present in the world being shown.

    Production is downstream of distribution

The biggest mistake: buying production before there''s a media plan. A beautiful film with nowhere to run is a souvenir, not an asset. Build the distribution system first.

    Start with the audit.
