How to choose a marketing agency in British Columbia: a 2026 checklist
By the Map Sense Media team · Published
We run a marketing agency in Abbotsford, British Columbia, so read this knowing where it comes from. It is still the same checklist we would hand a friend who is about to sign with any agency in the province, including ours.
Start with the three questions that decide everything
Before you look at a single portfolio, write down the answers to these three questions. Every agency you talk to should be measured against them.
- What number has to move? Showroom visits, booked consults, online orders, qualified leads, catering enquiries. One number, written down.
- What does one of those outcomes earn you? A dealership that nets $1,800 on a used-car sale can afford a very different cost per lead than a cafe selling $7 lattes. If you know this, you can judge any quote in minutes.
- Who on your side will answer the agency's questions within a day? The fastest way to waste a retainer is to leave an agency waiting for approvals.
If an agency does not ask you these questions in the first call, that tells you how they will run your account.
The four kinds of shops that call themselves agencies in BC
Between Vancouver, Surrey, Langley, Abbotsford, Kelowna and Victoria there are hundreds of businesses that call themselves marketing agencies. Most fall into one of four models. None is wrong, but each is built for a different job.
| Model | What they actually do | Best for | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freelancer or solo consultant | One discipline, usually design, social or ads | A single defined deliverable | No cover when they are sick or busy; no second opinion on strategy |
| Media reseller | Buys Meta and Google ads, often with a markup | Businesses that already have strong creative | Creative fatigue nobody fixes; results slide and the retainer continues |
| Production studio | Film, photo and design, no media or measurement | Launch films, brand campaigns, events | Beautiful work that nobody sees because nothing distributes it |
| Full-service agency | Strategy, creative, media and reporting under one roof | Owner-operated businesses that want one accountable team | Make sure production and media are really in-house, not subcontracted |
Ask every agency directly which of the four they are. The honest ones answer in one sentence.
Questions to ask on the first call
- Who does the work? Get names and roles. If the people on the pitch call disappear after signing, you bought a sales team, not a marketing team.
- Is production in-house? If the agency subcontracts video, a fatigued ad takes weeks to replace instead of days.
- How do you report, and from where? The acceptable answer is platform reporting (Meta Ads Manager, Google Ads, Google Search Console, Google Analytics) in Canadian dollars with the attribution window stated. A monthly PDF of impressions is not reporting.
- Who owns the ad accounts, pixels, footage and website? The answer must be you, from day one, in your own Business Manager and your own hosting account.
- Is ad spend marked up? Some agencies add 10 to 20 percent on media. It is not illegal, but it must be disclosed in writing.
- What is the cancellation policy? A confident agency offers month-to-month or 30-day notice. A twelve-month lock-in protects the agency, not you.
- Show me a client in my industry you took from A to B, with the numbers and the dates. A case study without spend, result and timeframe is a brochure.
Red flags that should end the conversation
- Guaranteed rankings or guaranteed leads with no definition of what counts as a lead.
- Results quoted as percentages with no base number. "+212% leads" from three leads to nine is not the same as from 300 to 936.
- Case studies with no client name, no dates and no platform screenshots.
- A proposal that lists deliverables but never mentions a measurement plan.
- Pressure to sign before you have seen the written scope.
What marketing actually costs in British Columbia
You will get a range of quotes, so here is the shape of the market as we see it from our own quoting in the Fraser Valley and Metro Vancouver. Treat these as orientation, not a price list.
- A focused production project (a brand film, a photography day, a campaign website) usually starts around CA$5,000 at Map Sense Media. Larger agencies often quote considerably more for a comparable deliverable; ask specifically what the difference buys (crew size, revisions, usage rights, account management) before assuming it buys a better result.
- Ongoing retainers that cover content, paid media management and reporting typically run CA$4,000 to CA$10,000 per month plus ad spend at Map Sense Media. Ad spend is paid by you, directly to Meta or Google.
- Ad spend itself is the part most owners underestimate. Across the small-business Meta accounts we have audited, campaigns that work well under CA$2,000 per month tend to hit a ceiling somewhere between CA$3,000 and CA$5,000 unless the creative supply keeps up. We wrote the full breakdown in our piece on why Canadian SMB Meta ads plateau at $3k a month.
A cheaper retainer that produces no creative is usually more expensive per result than a larger one that ships new ads every week.
How to verify an agency's results before you sign
- Ask for a Meta Ads Manager or Google Ads screenshot for the case study they quoted, with the date range visible.
- Ask what counted as a "result" in that account. A lead form, a WhatsApp conversation, a call and a purchase are all different, and they should never be added together.
- Call the client. Agencies that are proud of their work will make the introduction.
- Look up the agency's Google Business Profile. A real studio has an address, hours, photos of actual shoots and reviews from real companies.
For reference, here is how we publish our own numbers. On the Mainland Motors dealership group account, CA$131,283 of Meta spend produced 15.4 million impressions, 141,301 clicks and 3,953 leads and registrations, with the strongest single campaign delivering 1,012 registrations at CA$29.04 each. Those figures come from Meta Ads Manager, in Canadian dollars, on a seven-day click attribution window, with data through July 2026. If an agency cannot show you its numbers at that level of detail, assume it does not have them.
A simple scorecard
Give each agency a score from 1 to 5 on these six lines and add it up. The winner is rarely the cheapest or the most polished pitch.
- They asked what number has to move.
- Production and media are genuinely in-house.
- Reporting comes from the platforms, in CAD, with attribution stated.
- You own every account, file and asset from day one.
- Month-to-month or 30-day notice.
- At least one verifiable case study in your industry.
Where Map Sense Media fits
For transparency: Map Sense Media is a full-service agency in the fourth category above. We shoot, edit, build websites and buy media with our own team from a studio at 32835 South Fraser Way in Abbotsford, we work month to month, ad accounts stay in the client's name, and every figure we publish is taken from platform reporting with the source stated. We are the right fit for owner-operated businesses in the Fraser Valley and Metro Vancouver, and for paid media, SEO and web work anywhere in British Columbia. We are not the right fit for a brand that wants a 40-person Vancouver agency with a dedicated account team on each floor. If you want to check us against the scorecard above, call +1-250-797-5461 and ask the questions on this page.
