Local SEO in Canada: The 2026 Playbook for Ranking in Your City
By the Map Sense Media team · Published
Most Canadian businesses are losing local search to competitors who understand three things: Google Business Profile signals, review velocity, and geo-relevant content. Here is what we ship for clients across British Columbia.
1. Google Business Profile is 60% of the game
Before you touch on-page SEO, get your GBP airtight. Complete every field. Add real photos weekly. Use the exact business name registered in Canada, matching your website footer and every citation.
Categories matter more than most agencies admit. Pick one primary category that describes what you actually sell, and up to 9 secondaries that describe how you sell it. A dealership in Langley is "Car Dealer" (primary), not "Auto Broker."
2. Reviews are the compounding asset
Google weights recency and velocity. Ten reviews in the last 30 days beats fifty reviews from two years ago. Build a system: SMS request the day after service, direct link to your GBP review form, and respond to every single one within 48 hours.
Review responses are indexed. Mention the service delivered and the city naturally. "Thanks Priya, glad we could sort your Meta ads for the Surrey location" does more than "Thanks!"
3. NAP consistency across Canadian directories
Name, Address, Phone. Identical across your website, GBP, Yelp Canada, YellowPages.ca, Canada411, BBB, and industry directories. Formatting matters: "Suite 200" and "#200" are treated as different by some crawlers.
Run a citation audit quarterly. Cheap tools like BrightLocal will surface mismatches faster than you can find them manually.
4. Location pages that actually rank
One page per city you serve, with unique content. Not spun. Real photos from that location, real client names, real driving directions from local landmarks. Google can tell.
Minimum viable location page: 600 words, embedded map, three testimonials from that city, FAQ block, schema markup for LocalBusiness with the correct geo coordinates.
5. Content that ranks in a Canadian city
Write for the searcher, not the algorithm. "Best video production Langley" is a query. Your page answering it should include pricing ranges in CAD, turnaround times realistic for BC, and portfolio examples from businesses your reader recognizes.
Interlink aggressively. Every service page should link to relevant location pages and vice versa.
6. Technical basics that most miss
- Schema: LocalBusiness on every page, Service on service pages, FAQPage where you have Q&A
- Sitemap submitted to Google Search Console with a hreflang tag if you serve both English and French Canada
- Core Web Vitals green on mobile (LCP under 2.5s)
- HTTPS, mobile-first, no interstitial popups on first load
What we do for MSM clients
We rebuild the GBP, ship location pages the same week, wire up a review request system, and publish two local-intent articles per month. Most clients see maps pack impressions climb within 45 days.
If you are a Canadian operator ready to stop losing to bigger budgets, that is the playbook.
