The 5-asset creative system we use to keep dealership ads profitable

Why dealerships break standard creative playbooks

Dealership marketing is its own animal. Inventory turns over weekly, finance offers change monthly, and the audience splits hard between in-market shoppers (4–8% of the local market) and brand-aware browsers (everyone else).

We run paid media for three Mainland Motors locations across the Lower Mainland. The system below is what we landed on after 14 months of testing.

    The 5 asset types

    1. The "what''s on the lot" walkthrough (1 per week)

A 30–45 second walkthrough of 3–5 vehicles, shot vertically, narrated by the sales manager. No music, no graphics. Spoken stock numbers, spoken prices, clear "DM us the stock number" CTA. CPM runs 20–35% below studio-style ads in the same account.

    2. The financing/offer card (1 per week)

A static or 6-second motion graphic stating the month''s finance offer in plain language. No stock photos. Real numbers, real disclosure, real lot photo behind it.

    3. The customer pickup moment (2 per month)

A 15–25 second clip of a real customer taking delivery — keys, smile, drive-off. Permission asked and signed in writing before the camera comes out.

    4. The objection-answered piece (1 per month)

A 45–60 second talking-head from the GM directly addressing one common objection: "Why is your price higher than the listing?" / "What does the warranty cover?" / "Can you finance with bruised credit?"

    5. The "behind the scenes" / community piece (1 per month)

The dealership sponsoring a local hockey tournament. The service team at work. Pure brand. Zero offer. These drive brand search — the leading indicator that paid media is building owned demand.

    The production day, scheduled

Six hours on the lot: walkthroughs (h1), B-roll (h2), talking-heads (h3), two pickup shoots (h4), sales team interviews (h5), buffer + reshoots (h6). One operator, one camera. Sony A7IV + wireless lav. Monthly production cost lands between $1,800 and $2,400 per location.

    Campaign structure

    • Inventory-driven prospecting: Advantage+ Shopping, broad geo, walkthroughs + offer cards
    • Brand-driven retargeting: 30-day site visitors + VDP viewers, pickup moments + objection pieces + community

    What we measure, monthly

Cost per lead (Meta + GA4), cost per VIN sold (reconciled with the DMS), branded search volume (GSC), showroom walk-in count (front-desk tally). The first two are paid-media metrics. The last two are leading indicators that the brand-building assets are doing their job.

    What this system is not

It is not a substitute for inventory work, pricing discipline, or a functioning BDC. The best ad system in the world will not save a dealership that takes 8 hours to respond to a lead or prices 12% above market.

For stores with the basics in place, this system has held cost-per-VIN below the segment benchmark in every market we''ve tested it. Start with a leak audit.
